Interesting Empires
Do you find the preset empires in the selection screen dull and samey, without much thought given to diversity of origins or inclusion of DLC content?
Then this mod is for you!
(This is the random spawn version of Interesting Empires. The forced-spawn version of this file – where only my empires will spawn on the map – is Only Interesting Empires.)
This mod adds 58 new custom empires to the game, using content from the DLC listed on the right (with only one mod used to make city sets for a few of the empires more interesting: Pre-FTL City Sets & Rooms (& Flags)). This also makes it practically universally compatible with other mods.
I have combined logos, portraits, rooms, cities, traits, name lists, and shipsets in different ways to create balanced and cohesive, but interesting and distinctive empires. They work interchangeably with one another while blending seamlessly with base-game content and Stellaris lore, although a few are mutually exclusive due to their choice of origin.
If you just download this file and don’t do anything else with it, there is a chance of any of them appearing as AI-controlled empires in your game or can be selected as a player empire from the bottom of the empire selection screen. The one exception is the human empire, which can be selected as a player empire but is disabled from being picked as an AI empire by default.
Note that even if you don’t have some of the listed DLC or the Pre-FTL City Sets & Rooms (& Flags) mod, this mod will still work, but some species and empires will not appear due to their reliance on certain assets.
If you want to customise these empires to your own liking (or make up for the absence of certain DLCs you don’t own), or just want to choose their spawn settings yourself (forced/random/never), I would recommend following the following instructions to bring them up the empire selection screen into the user empire section:
- Start your Stellaris launcher, navigate to "Mod library" and hover over "Interesting Empires".
- Three dots should appear on the right of the screen. Click them, then click "Show in folder".
- When the mod folder has opened, click on the "prescripted_countries" folder, then open the "hentus_prescripted_countries" file in a notepad program (Notepad++ is best).
- Copy all content from this file (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C), then close it.
- Open your Stellaris local files. These are usually on your primary drive in Users[Your Name]DocumentsParadox InteractiveStellaris
- Open the "user_empire_designs_v[X.X]" (current version) file. If this doesn’t exist in this folder, it will be created when you make a custom empire and save it – you can do this quickly by just editing a Paradox preset empire and renaming it.
- Paste the copied content (Ctrl+P) into the top of the file, then save it.
- Run Stellaris – the empires should now be at the top of your empire selection screen with the togglable grey/orange buttons next to them.
This mod will function perfectly as a standalone mod, but it has been designed to work effectively with Council Position Diversity, which adds additional flavour to your government by implementing custom councillor titles.
You may also be interested in my mod adding Interesting Fallen Empires, and as mentioned above, a forced spawn version of this mod is also available: Only Interesting Empires.
Other mods that synergize well with empires in this mod include Dimorphism+ – Fox Portraits and Toxoid 02 (Machine Cult) Portrait. Please feel free to suggest others in the comments section!
I always welcome feedback, so if you liked Interesting Empires – or didn’t like it, and want to leave a downvote – I’d greatly appreciate any constructive criticism that will help me improve the mod.
