Description:
“It is an involuntary reaction,” she explained. “Our chromatophores respond to our emotional state, as do our papillae – the small muscle structures that give our skin its texture. In our prehistory, the system evolved to help camouflage us from predators and aid in hunting prey, but it became a means of communication as we became more advanced.”
“A social adaptation, like body language and facial expressions in humans,” he said with a nod. “Interesting. For such solitary and private people, your emotions are literally written on your skin for all to see.”

The Brokers are an enigmatic cephalopod species native to Trappist-1. Originating on the planet Reef – a tidally locked world dominated by tropical archipelagos – they have colonized their solar system and branched out to claim neighboring stars. Being a highly technological and capitalistic species, they value personal advancement and the acquisition of wealth above all else, even operating their government as a corporation with shareholders and a board of directors. They are not a social people, even among their own kind, preferring to spend much of their time in isolation. Brokers view aliens with fear and suspicion, only engaging in trade and diplomacy when deemed necessary or advantageous. Due to their low birth rates and a difficult reproductive cycle, they rely heavily on drones and automation to keep their society running, preferring to operate through proxies.
