Tearsdale’s Naval Overhaul
This is, for now, a relatively simple mod that changes a few aspects of naval gameplay, integrated with the amazing Space Combat Expanded suite of mods (specifically the Carriers and Dreadnoughts) by Team Nessassity. However, their mods are not needed for this mod to work its magic on your vanilla ships.
Please be aware that this is my first serious foray into Stellaris modding beyond namelist creation. Therefore do not expect super fancy additions do happen particularly fast, but I greatly appreciate any and all ideas you might have and want to share.
I do not currently plan to add additional ship classes (SCX does a splendid job in that regard without going overboard), but instead want to focus on gameplay tweaks that, in my eyes, make more sense than the vanilla numbers or just happen to be something I would like to see in the game. Policies, edicts, or decisions with a naval theme come to mind here. Provided my limited modding experience allows me to make it happen.
Focus of the initial uploads is to make cruisers and destroyers better at fighting piracy while corvettes received a nerf. They can still fill the role early game, but as piracy becomes a more pronounced issue it will be necessary to employ larger vessels better suited for the mission. Cruisers or battleships embarking strike craft in their hangars will be particularly effective, but even humble troop transports can help out a little.
I realise that this may seem counterintuitive, as battleships could easily be assumed to lack the speed necessary to catch up with faster and more nimble pirate vessels, but I believe that even a slow and ungainly military ship’s presence would serve to reduce piracy in a system, especially since any warship is bound to carry shuttles and other launches it could dispatch to board and inspect suspect traffic. Furthermore, even though battleships got a rather generous piracy suppression of 12 in this mod and ordinary corvettes only boast one of 4, for the cost of a single battleship it is easily possible to build and maintain a number of corvettes that will eclipse the battleship’s piracy suppression.
This mod also makes your ships gain experience for the higher veterancy levels at a somewhat more reasonable speed. They will become Experienced after 40 days in combat, Veteran after 120, and Elite after 360.
The list of changes for the current version of the mod is as follows:
===== v 1.1 =====
– Corvettes have changed Piracy Suppression of 4 (from 5, vanilla 10)
– Destroyers have changed Piracy Suppression of 8 (from 10, vanilla 8)
– Cruisers have changed Piracy Suppression of 20 (vanilla 6)
– Battleships have changed Piracy Suppression of 12 (from 5, vanilla 4)
– Titans have changed Piracy Suppression of 16 (from 5, vanilla 0)
– Troop Transports have changed Piracy Suppression of 4 (from 5, vanilla 0)
– Strike Craft have changed Piracy Suppression of 4 (from 10, vanilla 0)
– Initial integration with Space Combat Expanded:
— Carriers have changed Piracy Suppression of 16 (SCX vanilla 6)
— Dreadnoughts have changed Piracy Suppression of 12 (SCX vanilla 2)
===== Known Issues =====
– The Piracy Suppression tooltips tend to count some vessels of a given ship size into the total of another ship size for some reason; total values are correct
