Description:
Complex District Specializations – Rural Zone Expansion

This mod adds 40 district specializations for rural zones, each tied to a new planetary deposit. Every specialization offers its own mix of benefits, drawbacks, and strategic challenges, adding both flavor and depth to planetary development.

Many of these specializations are intentionally difficult to use. If mismanaged, they can cause serious downsides. Even when used well, some are meant to throw your economy off balance and create new challenges for experienced players.

At the same time, less experienced players are also welcome to give the mod a try. A color-coded warning system highlights the specializations that should be used with caution, while the vanilla district specializations always remain available as a safe alternative.

Recent update: Updated for Stellaris 4.4, including a compensation system for nomadic empires (see the Q&A for details), smaller balance changes, and additional localization polish for all 10 Stellaris-supported languages.

Features
  • 40 district specializations for rural zones
  • Matching planetary deposits
  • Optional colonization events
  • Planet modifiers with early hints about future district effects
  • Color-coded risk system for safer decision-making
  • Configurable start-up menu
  • Optional AI compensation system
  • Designed and balanced around the rebalanced vanilla economy in 4.3+

How It Works

Early in the game, each regular uncolonized planet has a chance to receive one of this mod’s new deposits. This chance can be configured in the mod’s settings at game start. Homeworlds and special planet classes such as Gaia worlds or volcanic worlds will not receive these deposits.

Once you survey a world with one of these deposits, a planet modifier will reveal its presence. Its tooltip tells you which district specialization may later be unlocked there and includes a short flavor text called Survey Findings, offering an early hint about its effects.

After you successfully colonize the planet, an optional flavor event can appear, giving you more concrete clues about what to expect.

A district specialization becomes available once the usual requirements have been fulfilled:
  • You have built at least one district of the relevant type.
  • You have researched the required base technology.
  • If strategic resources are involved, you have also researched the matching vanilla extraction technology.

These requirements are the same as for the corresponding vanilla district specializations.

District Specialization Design Philosophy

Each specialization comes with its own combination of advantages and drawbacks. Considerable effort has gone into making them feel distinct while keeping them balanced within the rebalanced vanilla economy of version 4.3+.

Not every specialization is meant to be equally useful in every situation. Part of the mod’s design is discovering under which conditions a specialization is truly worth using — and recognizing when current conditions do not support it well enough. As your colony develops, those conditions may change over time.

If managed well, the new specializations offer meaningful rewards that make the added complexity worthwhile.

The icon color serves as a quick visual guide to the level of risk involved, helping you judge how carefully a specialization should be managed. See the screenshots for details.

AI Support

The AI is instructed not to use the new district specializations.

To compensate for this, the mod includes a configurable AI bonus for planets under AI control that contain one of these deposits, which can be adjusted in the mod’s settings at game start.
