Description:

The idea for this mod came about because I got frustrated that it took too long to conquer my enemies in the late game. However, I realised that I could make something a bit more interesting than just a tech to make ceding planets for cheaper, since one could argue that the current techs cater sufficiently for ‘legitimate’ conquests, and so wanting to do it more is in essence saying you want to conquer everything, at which point one can’t expect the other empires to like one.

So this mod introduces a late-game tech called ‘Galactic Unification’ available to non-pacifists who don’t have enemies that are overwhelming towards them, which is more likely to turn up depending on how many planets the empire has and whether it is a militarist, etc. It offers 50% cheaper war demands for conquering planets and creating vassals. This makes it much easier to conquer your enemies quickly in the late game. The price is that everyone will hate you for it. Other empires with the tech will especially hate you, as you are declaring yourself their rival; the same goes for fallen and awakened empires. If you are playing a game with at least four fallen empires, a fallen empire with opposing ethics to you (or, if you are playing FEE, the militarist FE) is likely to awaken and pick a fight with you. Meanwhile, normal empires without the tech will gradually gain a positive modifier to each other, making it more likely the rest of the universe will come together and unite against the threat you pose.

Since it is such a divisive tech, I’ve also added a policy that allows you to renounce your aim of galactic unification. This means you will no longer benefit from the tech’s bonuses, but equally people will stop hating you (awakened empires will not go back to sleep, though). It becomes available ten years after you research the tech, and cannot be chosen when you are at war (there’d be some obvious exploits if that were allowed). The AI will choose to renounce if a hostile empire has an overwhelming fleet against it.

I have added popup events (with texts customised by how much of a threat they are to you) that tell you when another country has researched Galactic Unification or changed its policy to it.

Compatibility:
I overwrite the following files: 00_planetary_war_demands, 00_subject_war_demands and 00_station_war_demands. I don’t know any other mods that overwrite these files, let me know if you see any.

Localisations: English and German. I might make French someday, but imperfectly. It’s not that much text, let me know if you want to do your language and I’ll provide the files.

Finally, if you like this mod, please

My other mods:
Potent Rebellions Expanded: Makes unrest and rebellions a lot more challenging through waves of unrest, special slave revolt empires, a mechanism to sow unrest in other empires, and many other new mechanics and rebalances.
Sow Unrest and Support Rebellions: ‘Lite’ version of PRE with the mechanism to sow unrest and one to support rebellions.
CC’s Spaceports and Forts Mod: General overhaul of spaceports, with new spaceport modules, customisable spaceport designs (so their strength becomes greater as the game goes on), and generally much stronger spaceports (up to 50k). Forts have new section templates and buffs to be similarly strong. Also a Spaceport and a Forts-themed Ascension Perk.
More Interesting Spaceport Modules: A ‘lite’ version of the previous mod, including only the new spaceport modules, the spaceports AP and a bit of a buff for spaceports.
The Utopian Dream: Mainly AlphaAsh’s creation, it does a lot of cool things to the Utopia DLC. I collaborated with him to update to 1.8 and add some new features.
