As of 2.8, this mod is no longer being updated. I have integrated it into gigastructure, where it will get further updates and features. All of the patches are also included within gigastructures. The Event Horizon Offset Facility uses and manipulates the extremely abnormal conditions at the edge of an black hole’s event horizon, in order to travel extreme distances across the galaxy and beyond.

Everywhere in the universe, quantum effects of the uncertainty principle create countless vacuum fluctuations – antimatter-matter particle pairs – which pop in and out of reality in an instant. Those fluctuations twist space-time in various abstract manners.

At the edge of an black hole’s event horizon, these vacuum fluctuations are present in an enormous quantity. Space-time gets warped so extremely – in such tiny volumes of space – that it leads to abnormal changes of the volume’s energy conditions. These spontaneous instabilities lead to the creation of virtual micro wormholes, which exist only for such a short period of time, that they are unable to influence reality in a classical manner, and cannot be used for space travel.

The Event Horizon Offset Facility uses these virtual micro wormholes to its advantage. It makes use of hyper-advanced technologies, to turn these micro wormholes into practical, real wormholes and inflates their size to a utilisable magnitude. They can then be used in order to travel around the universe, without restriction to their possible distance. However, the location a wormhole can lead to is absolutely random, with total equalisation for the probabilities.

Besides the ability to create randomised wormholes, the Event Horizon Offset Facility vastly increases physics research and gives access to a new strategic resource, called Quasi-Negative Mass, which is created as a byproduct of stabilising the wormholes. This Quasi-Negative Mass comes with different benefits for the empire and has additional uses later in the game.

While the Event Horizon Offset Facility is definitely a scientific miracle, it is a really dangerous construct. Due to randomness of the wormholes, they may lead to lethal destinations, like the inside of stars or black holes. They may even lead to destinations which lie beyond our scientific understanding. Wormholes may collapse, ships will get lost and fleets may return twisted and changed from their journeys, hostile against their own people, but the ability of the Event Horizon Offset Facility to safely inflate and stabilise wormholes evolves with its own evolution. It gets more precise, more secure and offers more types of destination the further it has advanced.

In the end, it may be the ultimate asset of an interstellar empire, giving it opportunities beyond what others will ever be capable of and could give them the power to rule the galaxy!
